Who are the Roma people?

The Roma are a people group with no home country. They are scattered primarily throughout Europe, but also the world. Typically living in tight-knit exclusive communities, the Roma maintain a unique culture and close family ties.

Child Education

 

Vision 

Related to education, our vision is to see (1) the Roma appreciate education for themselves and their children, (2) the establishment of a reproducible model of pre-school education for the Roma children and (3) a positive integration of Roma into the local schools with a lessening degree of discrimination.

The primary efforts related to education include (1) helping establish or more-effectively operate pre-schools in Roma communities and (2) providing support to school age children through after-school tutoring and summer camps.

Leader of the education effort: Alicia Jones

Alicia is a member of Fairview Baptist Church and is from Raleigh, North Carolina. She has a Bachelor of Science in Birth to Kindergarten from Campbell University and a Masters of Divinity in Christian Ministries from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. It is Alicia's prayer that God would raise up a generation of Roma who love the Lord and love learning. Alicia has been serving in Eastern Europe since July 2012 and has learned Hungarian. Partnership with Current Roma Child Education Efforts

Providing pre-school education to the Roma is a shared vision; many have invested years, monies and prayers toward this goal in many Roma communities throughout Eastern Europe. Some communities have a small pre-schools, but still many communities have no access to education prior to first grade. In the pre-schools that do exist there are great needs, like food for the children and basic educational supplies. The goal of Love۰Help۰Teach is to support healthy pre-schools serving Roma children to facilitate the integration of children into elementary schools in the local district.

Curriculum and Culturally Appropriate Education

An understanding of the Roma life and culture is the starting point for developing quality curriculum. The primary goal of the curriculum used among the Roma is to nurture an understanding and appreciation of school in both children and parents. 

The curriculum Love۰Help۰Teach seeks to use is built on four foundational goals: 1) Building Language, 2) Increasing Logic, 3) Strengthening Physical Health and 4) Establishing Faith. To accomplish these goals the curriculum integrates Biblical stories, manipulation activities, team work and practical skills. Students learn in large groups, small groups and individual settings throughout each educational experience, whether the pre-school day or an afterschool program. Because of the unique cultural background and home life of the Roma in this region, the classroom setting is simple and structured around storytelling, social interaction, practicing daily life skills and expression through the arts, like music, art and dance.
