Who are the Roma people?

The Roma are a people group with no home country. They are scattered primarily throughout Europe, but also the world. Typically living in tight-knit exclusive communities, the Roma maintain a unique culture and close family ties.

About Love۰Help۰Teach

Love۰Help۰Teach is a ministry of Baptists On Mission among the Roma people living in Hungary, Ukraine and Romania. The ministry vision includes Child Education, Medical Care and Pastor Training. We pray for the transformation of lives among the Roma as their belief in Christ results in a healthy, educated and spiritually vibrant community.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.  - 1 John 3:16-18

Mission Statement

Our mission is (1) to love the Roma by meeting their needs, (2) to help their children build strong foundations for learning and life, and (3) to teach the people who God is and what He has done for them as written in the Bible.

Target Population

We work with Roma churches and communities in Romania, Ukraine and Hungary. The Roma suffer from discrimination and seclusion which often results in unemployment, poverty, poor health and lack of educational opportunity.

Current Efforts and Partnerships

The leadership in Eastern Europe generally desires to see the government help alleviate the suffering of the Roma people and enable them to become a significant, self-sustaining population that contributes to society. We seek to support and network with pastors of Roma churches in large towns and small villages. Many Roma churches partner with Hungarian Baptist Aid in Budapest, Hungary, and with Baptists On Mission and Love۰Help۰Teach in Cary, N.C., U.S.A. Operating under the guidance of Baptists On Mission, Love۰Help۰Teach seeks to support current and new work through partnership.

Brief History

In 2007, Baptists on Mission began a formal partnership with a network of Roma churches in Ukraine. Teams of 10-12 people, primarily from Baptist churches across North Carolina, traveled to Ukraine each summer to do Vacation Bible School, light construction, and men's and women's ministries. In 2010, medical personnel began traveling to New Life Roma Church to hold clinics for the people. From these trips, the need for a long-term, ongoing effort became evident. Begining in 2013 the Roma Bible Institute connected Baptists on Mission with Roma communities in Romania and Hungary. In March of 2013 the first team from North Carolina served a Roma church and community in Romania. In June of 2014 the first team served in Hungary at a Baptist supported school. The three aspects of Love۰Help۰Teach - the child education, medical care, and pastor training are led by various North Carolina Baptists who sense God's call to serve the Roma of Eastern Europe. The summer trips and medical trips are an ongoing part of the effort of Love۰Help۰Teach and the Baptists on Mission partnership.
